Progression vs. Regression

Common man lives in an environment that is altered and changed by him. Over the years, he has evolved, therefore having an after-effect in his surroundings. He started to change his channel of thinking and developed his milieu that suited his way of living.

A society is subject to change; the main reason being, the residents are humans. Human beings are never constant. Their basic needs and necessities keep altering as they evolve. Thus, man decided to take nature’s assistance to provide his ever growing population with food, clothing and shelter. This is where it all began: Climatic Regression.

Change is good when the society has sustainable development. This means the society moves up the ladder without damaging its surroundings or disturbing any part of nature. This was not how man was going to achieve his goals in life: “keeping nature in mind!” Instead, he decided to sabotage the vivacity of nature and her components and keep himself happy.

Climate, like humans is subject to change. In other words, it is a variable. Just like how you and I would have a repulsive reaction when we touch a hot plate, similarly climate would react to unexpected changes made especially by man. This is similar to Newton’s third law of Motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

According to the Environment Policy, climate change refers to the change in modern climate. These changes may occur in a specific region or may affect the earth’s surface as a whole. There are a few factors, both natural and man-made that lay the foundation to this climatic change phenomenon. These factors are otherwise called “forcings”. More than nature causing climatic variations, it is us humans who cause most of the damage.

As the population is increasing by the minute, there is more space taken up. This means a few more trees are sawed down; tall buildings built all across the cities; no space for a green patch to grow! This gives you an idea about how selfish we are. Without thinking about repercussions of using 2 four-wheelers by the people from the same household thereby emitting abundant amount of CO2 into the air we breathe simultaneously, we still continue to do what we want. No amount of environment protection Act by the government or public awareness campaigns conducted by Greenpeace has changed the way we think. Man, unlike other living beings has the ability to think. However, the anthropocentric view of the human race has blindfolded him to think of his needs and desires primarily.

With the sea levels rising, no rains and glaciers melting, the earth will soon reach its saturation point. Before we are caught red-handed, it is our responsibility as dwellers of Mother Earth to save her from being engulfed into darkness because of our own selfish motives. The secret towards this is: Sustainable Development.

  1. Wonderful Article. Unless the Governments come up with some strict Environmental Acts, Mother World would deteriorate further to an uncontrollable and unstoppable darkness, as you said.

  3. First of all, awesome article..Secondly, I'd like to add that the process of development these days involves more of regression in some way or the other..It's in the hands of youngsters like us to bring about change or i'd rather say sustainable development. Cos the government will not think twice if they have to slaughter trees in order to build a flyover or a skyscraper..It's essentially in the hands of nature lovers to bring about this kind of change. The Government is occupied with loadsa other crap..So, as you said, we should do it before Mother World could deteriorate further to an uncontrollable and unstoppable darkness.

The playground theory

As part of a fitness routine, my husband and I have started going for regular walks. Bangalore, famous for its 'parks', has a small one just about a kilometre away from my place. We go around the park several times hoping the weighing scale shows some mercy on us and we have thankfully been successful so far. This gives me the time to think about life, how time has passed by in a hurry and how things have changed in so little time. Looking at 2 feet tall kids running around, it makes me feel so old and it got me thinking - when was the last time I was so carefree and all I had to worry about in life was "When do I get to go to the park the next day?" To come to think of it, kids during their playtime can actually teach you a lot and so can monkey bars and slides! Here are some instances that got me thinking: The oh-so-tall slide - Kids are hell scared to get on top of the slide and are terrified that they might tumble down. But when its quite successful the fi...

Tiny steps to a better future..

Sitting here in a cubicle that belongs to me for the next one month at The Hindu H.O in Chennai gives me the heebie jeebies (goose bumps i.e.). Not for once did I think of applyin g for a print organization, especially to The Hindu. Not for once did I ever, in my wildest dreams think that they would approve of my application for my internship programme in the first semester. What a nail biting period it was; from the minute I pressed the “send” button in gmail, where the mail had my CV and acknowledgement letter from my university to the time I got a reply from the associate editor of Hindu. An internship is meant for training; one might not be able to get a hands-on experience on-field. This was my assumption. I entered the office thinking that I will not be given too many opportunities as a full-time reporter would get. But guess what.. I got my first two assignments the day I joined. After deciding to take a drastic step by moving away from the field of sociology and landing with a ...
